Top 10 most entertaining presidential elections

Another Summer Olympics is drawing to a close, and we all know what that means: it's time to elect a president! Throughout the years, American presidential campaigns have been vitriolic, fierce, confusing, and oftentimes downright wacky. In that spirit, we count down the top 10 most entertaining presidential elections since 1788.

10. 1948

In the post-FDR age, Republicans had taken control of Congress in 1946, and they pitted Thomas Dewey against incumbent Harry Truman in the presidential campaign two years later. As the election drew nearer, a Dewey win was characterized as imminent by virtually all major news sources. As Dewey planned his inauguration, word filtered in that--surprise!--Truman had ridden a late surge to victory, much to the embarrassment of the Chicago Tribune.
