Spotify might want to rethink the way it works. After Taylor Swift complained about the service and never allowed 1989 to stream there, the company could miss out on 2015’s biggest album: Adele’s 25.
According to The Verge, Adele and her team are trying to convince Spotify to only allow 25 to be streamed for premium subscribers, who pay $9.99 a month to use Spotify without commercials. Spotify doesn’t want to do that and would rather have the album available for all of its 75 million users. (Only 20 million of their users are premium subscribers.
A Spotify executive told The Verge that no one has asked them to feature 25 as a premium-only album. But this does sound likely since Adele tried to make 21 available only for premium subscribers. Eventually, 21 did make it to Spotify though.
Another issue for Spotify is that Coldplay might not make its new album, A Head Full of Dreams, available. The group hasn’t committed to Spotify, a source told The Verge. It hits stores on Dec. 4.
While Spotify might have trouble getting 25, Apple Music and Google Play Music will be able to say that they have it first. That’s because neither of those services have an ad-supported level.
Last year, Spotify had a very public war of words with Swift, who refused to make 1989 available to stream. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek insisted that artists are paid every time someone listens to their work. Still, other artists followed Swift’s lead and pulled their music.
25 will be released on Nov. 20 and features the already-smash hit single “Hello.”
