AMC has been making a fortune off of The Walking Dead and its spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, and the network is reportedly working on a third zombie show.
George A. Romero’s zombie comic book series Empire of the Dead is reportedly being developed by AMC. Marvel artist Arthur Suydam broke the news in an interview with WHAS11.
It was revealed back in May that a potential Empire of the Dead TV series was being shopped around, but this is our first confirmation that it has likely found its home.
George A. Romeo is responsible for creating the modern zombie genre with films like Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, so seeing him head to the network that took inspiration from him in The Walking Dead seems rather fitting. Romero is expected to executive produce the new series.
Six seasons in, The Walking Dead is still one of the highest rated shows on the air, although viewership has been slightly down this season. Some have speculated that this is partly due to the over saturation of the zombie genre, so will Empire of the Dead actually be able to keep people interested?
Unlike Romero's other work, Empire of the Dead also features vampires, and the zombies are just as intelligent as when they were alive, which will at least set it apart from the rest of AMC's lineup.
