Fire destroys home of singer Johnny Mathis (Video)

Authorities said that the Hollywood Hills home of singer Johnny Mathis has been practically destroyed by a fire.

The Los Angeles Times noted that a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department said that the 80-year-old singer’s longtime home caught fire just after 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

Mathis had just flown back from a performance in Cleveland when he learned that his mansion on Stebbins Terrace had caught fire.

It took dozens of firefighters to battle the blaze, which was contained after about a half an hour, but the home sustained extensive damage. Mathis owned the property for more than 55 years and now most of the inside was reduced to ashes and many of his personal items were not spared.

"I'm OK, nobody got hurt -- that's always important. We can always replace things," he said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and remains under investigation at this time.

Mathis is known for his many hits including "Chances Are," and "It's Not for Me to Say." He has sold over 350 million albums worldwide.
