George R.R. Martin says 'Game of Thrones' will have a bittersweet ending

If we've learned anything from Game of Thrones, it's that nothing good seems to happen to anyone likable, but the creator is now promising the series' ending won't be as bleak as you'd expect.

During a recent appearance at the Northwestern Medill School of Journalism, Martin told Game of Thrones fans to have some hope about the story's conclusion, notes Time.

"People ask me how Game of Thrones is gonna end, and I’m not gonna tell them...but I always say to expect something bittersweet in the end,” he said, reports Vulture.

He mentioned J.R.R. Tolkien as an example of an author who wrote bittersweet finales, so fans should anticipate something similar in tone to the ending of The Lord of the Rings. In other words, some great victory has been accomplished, but a lot was lost along the way. Martin also cited Tolkein as an inspiration for his ending during a talk in August.

So if you were expecting Game of Thrones to wrap up with Ramsay Bolton sitting on the Iron Throne surrounded by the severed heads of Arya, Bran, Sansa, Rickon and Jon, it looks like it won't be quite that dark.

We still don't have any idea when the next Game of Thrones book will come out, but Martin has said that he has known the ending for a long time now. In fact, he has told showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss what happens, so even if the TV series diverges from the novels, they will both end up in the same place.

Game of Thrones returns for its sixth season in spring 2016.
