J.J. Abrams reveals backstory of Maz Kanata in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

One of the most mysterious characters in the advertising of 'The Force Awakens' has been Maz Kanata, played by Lupita Nyong’o. Director J.J. Abrams has just given us a few more details about her character.

First of all, Abrams confirmed that Kanata is the small alien creature wearing goggles on the official 'Force Awakens' poster. Her goggles and her eyes specifically are evidently an important aspect of her character, as Abrams pointed out.

The director got a bit into the character's backstory as well.

“Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time,” he said. “She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the Star Wars universe.”

Especially given Kanata's narration in the recent trailer, it sounds like she will serve as the wise character offering advice and information to our leads, sort of like this movie's version of Yoda. We apparently won't find out all there is to know about her in 'The Force Awakens', though, as Abrams noted we'll get her full backstory "in other venues."

Abrams also said that he originally wanted Kanata to be a puppet, but when he and the team figured out what she would be doing in the movie, he felt like motion capture would be the best option. Could she get involved in the action at some point?

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' hits theaters on December 18.
