Jane The Virgin opened on the day after the incident with Michael and Rafael. Not only is Jane getting ready to meet with Rafael and his lawyer for estate planning, but she is also preparing for graduate school orientation. She is also dealing with different milestones, such as not being with Michael. We also discover Michael is not being kidnapped by Nadine, but that he had called her to ask for help in catching Sin Rostro. In his words, Sin Rostro cost Michael everything he had.
After apologizing to Rafael for not believing in him, Jane goes in to the lawyer’s office, where he quickly asks her questions about what would happen to Mateo in the event of their deaths. Then she discovers Mateo is supposed to come into $40 million from his trust, leading her to try and not panic.
Jane talks to her mom and Alba about the money. She is concerned about it getting to Mateo’s head in the future and tells them she is going to look over the trust agreement. They go to see Rogelio on his last day for The Passion of Santos, in which his character marries Luciana’s character.
Petra is with Milos trying to organize a sale of the grenades to get rid of them. However, Milos refuses to sell to the buyer when he tries to ask to sleep with Petra. Frustrated at having to wait so long, Petra goes to vent to her mother. They talk and Petra and Magda agree they wish she was out to help Petra. However, there may be a way.
After the series wrap, Rogelio awkwardly thanks the crew and promises to bring them with him on his next show. However, Luciana reveals that they are joining her on her new telenevola, which she will star opposite Rogelio’s nemesis, Esteban.
Jane goes to her orientation, which is being run by Professor Jonathan Chavez (Adam Rodriguez). It is clear by the way he talks about having cell phones out that he doesn’t want technology to interrupt, but then Jane gets a call from Mateo’s pediatrician. After taking the call, she finds that she has been locked out of the room.
Jumping forward a month later, Jane has been working hard at school, but she is dealt a blow with a low grade for not being original with her love story. The professor suggests she go on a writer’s retreat that can help. She later leaves to go to mommy’s group, where Rafael is successfully doing a song with the baby. Jane is uncomfortable at missing so much, especially when she finds out Rafael bought ten loveys after a mom’s story about forgetting hers.
At lunch, Jane and Rafael go over the revisions Jane made to the trust, which are pretty extreme. Jane hurts Rafael’s feelings when she brings up that she doesn’t want Mateo thinking he can just get everything he wants. Rafael leaves to take a phone call while Jane images Mateo as Oliver Twist.
Petra comes to talk to Jane and ask if she would support her mother getting out for parole. Jane is unsure, especially because of what Magda did to her grandmother, and Petra mentions being overwhelmed with her pregnancy.
Rogelio talks to network executives about doing his own show like Mad Men only in telenovela form. They leave and discuss giving him a small budget until he ends up driving the show into the ground.
At Mateo’s pediatrician appointment, Jane and Rafael find out that Mateo’s head is flatter than normal and he needs to wear a helment to reshape his head. Jane is upset, realizing she spent so much time with homework that she didn’t put him down for tummy time enough. Rafael agrees they will look everything over, but then he leaves to go to Petra’s ultrasound, where Milos is also present. When the doctor tells them the sex of the baby, they are shocked to discover Petra is pregnant with twin girls.
Another month goes by with Jane at the writer’s retreat. She is upset because she is unable to get a call with Rafael since he is at the doctor’s getting Mateo’s helmet fitted. Plus, she is also away from Mateo for the first time and she finds the giraffe stick that Michael had made for her the first time they camped together.
Petra and Magda reunite, but Petra is a little annoyed with Magda begins to criticize her. She points out she has been trying to be positive since seeing a therapist. Petra mentions that her pregnancy gave Jane sympathy to make her look good for the parole board and now she needs help with Milos. Petra is surprised to see what looks like a tattoo of a tear on her mother’s face.
Jane goes to talk to some people at the retreat, but one person, Wesley, is standoffish since she isn’t open about her personal life. She ends up telling the group about her entire experience in the past year, and ends up making a friend.
Later that night, Jane goes back to her cabin to write, but then is distracted when her boobs begin to feel uncomfortable. She tries to pump, but can’t find the plug for the machine.
Rogelio is working on his show when the network executive comes to speak to him. They tell him that because he is out of money and behind schedule, they are cancelling his show.
Rafael comes to Jane’s rescue with the plug for her pump. She gets to see Mateo in his hat. Since he is sleeping and will wake up hungry, she decides not to pump. They talk about the trust fund and share a moment, but when Rafael goes to kiss her, Jane admits she is still not over Michael. Rafael realizes he needs to get over her.
When Mateo wakes up crying, Jane goes to feed him, but he won’t latch onto her boob. It is only when he accepts a bottle that she realizes he is completely weaned from her.
At mommy group a month later, Jane mentions to another mom that she is still pumping even though Mateo is no longer nursing. The mom asks Jane if it would be weird if something happened with her and Rafael. Jane plays it off, but later vents to Wesley about what is going on. He tells her that based on the information about his family, it’s best they are not dating.
They are interrupted when they hear Rogelio scream. He is watching the telenovela Luciana is on and they are making fun of him. Meanwhile, Petra is saying goodbye to Milos, who is going back to Russia to find a buyer. But their plan to get rid of the grenades while he is gone is interrupted when Ivan, their former hostage, shows up to keep an eye on them.
Rafael calls Jane to tell her about the mom asking him out and she admits she knew about it. She tells him it’s not weird at all then mentions having to sleep to be up to pump. But it is clear it is taking a toll on her when she falls asleep in class and ends up in academic probation.
Another month passes as Jane works on writing while pureeing food. She gets Mateo out of his high chair and asks Alba about his lovey. Alba is concerned that Jane is burning up with a fever. When Jane finds out Rafael has the lovey, he comes over to see she has a diaper over her boob because of a clogged duct. He suggests that she stop pumping, but a cranky Jane refuses to listen and tells him to leave.
Magda and Petra successfully get Ivan out of the apartment by sending Milos’ files to the Czech authorities to get him arrested.
Jane and Rafael talk after he comes back from a gala. She is concerned about not pumping altogether and Rafael tells her that Mateo is doing great eating solids and he wants her to feel better. A relieved Jane agrees with him.
Petra and Magda get rid of the grenades, and a surprised Petra feels the babies kick. She then gets a horrific shock when her mom picks up a grenade that was unknowingly left without a pin.
Luckily, Magda survived, but lost an eye and a hand. Petra asks about Thanksgiving, but doesn’t get an answer. In the hall, she sees Jane give Mateo a bottle and asks how she is able to handle everything so naturally. Jane admits she doesn’t and that she is learning as everything happens.
Jane and Rafael meet with the lawyer to discuss their agreement on Mateo’s trust fund, which includes making sure he gives money to charity. Meanwhile, Rogelio tells Xo and Alba that his new show was a success with other investors. He admits he is nervous about following up on his previous show. Jane comes home with Mateo, who got his helmet off, and she puts away the pump for the last time before throwing away the memento from Michael.
The family has Thanksgiving together and shares what they are thankful for. Petra comes over with Mateo’s lovey and has Thanksgiving dinner with them. Later, Rogelio gets a call from his lawyer and it turns out the creator of Mad Men is not happy about their show. Inside, Jane and Rafael talk about the end of his relationship with Jill from the group, and how it was because Rafael still wants to be with her. He asks her out and she says yes.
In a twist that of epic proportions, we see Wesley talking to Scott and working on something that involves the Solanos.
Then we see Michael is back in town and is at the police station to talk to Susannah. Meanwhile, Petra goes back toward the suite as Ivan comes to see Magda and threatens her with something she is hiding from Petra. When Petra comes in, she discovers her mother has killed Ivan.
