Kansas City Royals win World Series

After coming up short last year, the Kansas City Royals are now World Series champions. The Royals beat the New York Mets 7-2 Sunday night to win the title.

The Mets, who needed a win to keep any championship hopes alive, were leading 2-0 entering the ninth inning then Royals' Lorenzo Cain walked and stole second. Eric Hosmer then had an RBI-double and moved to third on Mike Moustakas’s groundout. Salvador Perez hit a chopper to Mets third baseman David Wright and Hosmer scored as Wright threw to first. That tied the game and the it went to extra innings.

In the 12th, Christian Colon had an RBI-single which gave the Royals a 3-2 lead. Alcides Escobar then hit an RBI double and Cain had a three-run double, giving the Royals the highest-scoring extra inning in World Series history, according to MLB.com.

Wade Davies closed it out for the Royals as the Mets weren’t able to come back.

"It's the best," Hosmer said. "We came back and won a world championship. Words can't even describe how awesome this feels right now. Couldn't have done it with a better group of guys. We battled since Day 1, Minor Leagues a lot of us and this is an unbelievable feeling."

Royals manager Ned Yost said that is was special to win the World Series title with this group of guys.

Perez was named the World Series MVP after hitting .364 with two doubles and two RBIs. Sunday’s win was the Royals, eighth comeback win in the playoffs and they become the first team since the 2002 Los Angeles Angels to come from behind in all four World Series wins, according to the Associated Press.

It’s the team's first championship since 1985. The Mets haven’t won a World Series title since 1986.

The Royals will have a parade in Kansas City on Tuesday.
