Latino group offers $5,000 to call Donald Trump racist during ‘SNL’ gig

Latinos will not soon forget the controversial comments Donald Trump made about Mexican immigrants over the summer, and now they want to have him called out as a “racist” on live TV.

Cleveland.com reported that Latino advocacy groups tried to get NBC to pull the plug on having Trump host Saturday Night Live. However, the network refused thus far, so the groups came up with another idea and are offering $5,000 to anyone in the audience who calls him a “racist” while he is hosting the show.

Many are wondering why after NBC said it was cutting all ties with the real-estate mogul turned Republican presidential candidate, they are allowing him to host. And some in the Latino community worry that this appearance on the iconic comedy show will not only increase his platform but also his popularity among voters.

As Julio Ricardo Varela, the digital media director of NPR's Latino USA and founder of LatinoRebels.com, wrote in a column for the Guardian, perhaps Latinos can use the fuel to turnaround their voting numbers.

“If the push to disinvite Trump from SNL is unifying Latino organizations around a common cause and – more importantly – is causing Latino voters to be more active in the political process, then the campaign is doing its job,” he said. “Latino voters have some of the worst voter turnout numbers in the United States. By focusing on a television show with failing grades when it comes to Latinos, calling out a network that has backtracked on its promises to Latinos and also never forgetting Trump’s anti-Mexican comments, there’s a greater possibility that in 2016 those lower voter turnout numbers will increase significantly.”
