Liam Neeson to star as Deep Throat in Watergate thriller

After spending the last few years focused on action films like Taken, Liam Neeson is heading back to the historical drama in a new movie about Watergate.

Neeson has been cast as FBI informant Deep Throat in Felt, MadRiver Pictures said in a statement.

Deep Throat (Mark Felt) is known for leaking classified information regarding Watergate which lead to President Richard Nixon's downfall.

The movie will be written and directed by Peter Landesman, whose directorial debut was the JFK assassination film Parkland. His newest movie is Concussion, which stars Will Smith as a forensic pathologist researching brain damage inflicted on players in the NFL. Both Concussion and Felt are produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions.

Felt is described as a "taut spy thriller" that will portray the lead character as a man disheartened by the agency he works for, but who struggles with the decision to release classified documents.

The story of Nixon and Deep Throat has been previously told on screen in All The President's Men, although at that time the identity of Deep Throat was still a mystery. Mark Felt was finally revealed as Deep Throat only ten years ago.

Principal photography on Felt is set to begin in March  2016.
