Noomi Rapace cast as Amy Winehouse in new biopic

A biopic about Amy Winehouse is in the works, and the upcoming film has just found its lead.

According to Screen Daily, Noomi Rapace has been cast as the famous British singer and songwriter. Rapace is known primarily for her roles in Prometheus and the Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

The Amy Winehouse film, which is using the working title Amy Winehouse, will be written and directed by Kirsten Sheridan (August Rush, Dollhouse). Negotiations for the rights to Winehouse's music are currently underway.

This will be the first dramatic film to be made about the late singer, although she was the subject of a recent documentary, Amy, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year and has been met with almost widespread critical acclaim. Winehouse's father Mitch has spoken out against the film, however, calling the filmmakers "a disgrace."

Winehouse was the first British woman to win five Grammy awards, and she's remembered for the albums Frank and Back to Black. Her struggles with substance abuse became well known in the media, and she died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27.
