There probably won't be another 'Peanuts' movie for a while, says Jean Schulz

The Peanuts Movie has been a critical and box office success, but despite that it doesn't appear to be getting a sequel anytime soon.

According to The Wrap, FOX only had the rights to make one Peanuts film so the creation of any further movies would require the approval of Jean Schulz, who is the widow of comic artist Charles Schulz.

Although Schulz said her late husband would have been pleased with the new film, she also said she's in no rush to spearhead a sequel.

"This one took eight years, so maybe we’ll talk again then," she said.

Going by that timeline, assuming conversations about a sequel only begin in eight years, audiences probably wouldn't see Charlie Brown again until 2025 at the earliest.

FOX would of course love to turn Peanuts into a big franchise, especially when the film grossed $44 million this past weekend. But that's going to be a more complicated process than you'd expect, as just getting one Peanuts off the ground was a massive headache for the studio.

That's because Charles Schulz was very protective of the Peanuts brand and was skeptical about giving it the Hollywood treatment. Jean Schulz noted that it wasn't that her husband was against movies, but he didn't think he would have the time to oversee the project and make sure it was coming out the way he'd want.

Still, the fact that she's happy with FOX's treatment of the brand means that a sequel isn't totally off the table; it will just probably take a lot longer than the studio would have hoped.
