Universal is hard at work on their new slate of monster movies and the Van Helsing reboot now has its writers.
According to Variety, Universal has just hired Jon Spaihts and Eric Heisserer to co-write Van Helsing. Spaihts is known for his work on Prometheus and he's expected to write Universal's Mummy reboot as well. Meanwhile, Eric Heisserer has worked on horror reboots like The Thing and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
This will be a part of Universal's planned cinematic universe, where each of their classic monsters gets a dedicated film and eventually cross paths with one another. It's a clear attempt to emulate the success of Marvel, although the original Universal monsters series in the 1940s was actually one of the original shared universes on film.
The Mummy (2017) will be the first of these movies and the studio also plans to reboot Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Invisible Man. Aside from The Mummy, though, no release dates have been set for any of these projects and it's unclear where exactly Van Helsing will fit in.
The Mummy hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
