Writer takes out full-page Hollywood Reporter ad to pitch 'Die Hard' prequel idea

Many Die Hard fans who are unhappy with the news of an upcoming prequel probably wish they could suggest their ideas, and one writer has spent thousands of dollars to do just that.

As initially pointed out by users on Twitter, a writer and producer named Eric D. Wilkinson recently took out a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter to pitch his idea for the new Die Hard prequel, Die Hard: Year One.

The ad is written as an open letter to Bruce Willis and the makers of Die Hard, with Wilkinson saying Die Hard is his favorite movie of all time, but he is worried about the concept of telling an origin story. His version of the movie would flash back to show an unsolved case from John McClane's early days as a detective, a case which ends up landing him in a supermax prison in the present time. McClane then finds himself at the center of a prison riot, which is actually a plan to break a group of terrorists out so they can commit an attack on New York City.

The Die Hard prequel was announced last month, and it's expected to follow a young John McClane, played by a new actor, in 1979. The studio is currently looking for a writer, but considering this pitch seems to take place primarily in the present day, it seems unlikely they'll be contacting Wilkinson. His overall point about the upcoming movie needing to get smaller rather than bigger, though, is something that will likely resonate with plenty of fans.
