Chadwick Boseman will play the first African American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, in an upcoming courtroom thriller.
According to Deadline, Marshall will follow the iconic judge as a young man as he works on one of the defining cases of his career, when he was asked to defend a black chauffeur in a sexual assault and murder trial. The trial quickly became a huge story in the tabloids, and Marshall is paired up with young lawyer Samuel Friedman, who had no courtroom experience. The two must work together to fight against prejudice and figure out the truth.
The movie will be directed by Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang), who described Marshall as a cowboy who used law books as guns.
"He was the smartest guy in the room of any room he was in," Hudlin said. "But he wasn’t a punk and didn’t hesitate to throw a punch if the occasion called for it."
Marshall already has the support of the children of Thurgood Marshall and Samuel Friedman.
Casting Boseman as Marshall seems appropriate, as the actor is the first African American actor to star as the primary character in a Marvel film. He will be appearing in Black Panther as the lead superhero. Ryan Coogler (Creed) is in talks to direct.
Boseman has also played other historical figures. He played Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in Get On Up.
