The Leftovers will air its final season in 2016 and creator Damon Lindelof says we should expect something totally different.
In an interview with Slashfilm, Lindelof discussed the fact that seasons 1 and 2 both ended in a similar place with Kevin Garvey being surrounded by people he loved, but they need to do something different for the end of season 3.
"We can’t do that again, and not just because the audience is expecting it, but because we were telling a story about geography in season two, while season three is going to be something else entirely," he said.
The creator did not make clear if he means season 3 will no longer take place in Jarden, Texas, or if it just won't be about Jarden as much anymore next year. Lindelof also noted that he was surprised a lot of fans said they almost didn't want another season because the season 2 finale was a great ending. He decided he would take these reviews into account, and so he asked HBO if they could announce season 3 as the last one.
"If the critical audience is thinking season two is enough, then if we’re going to do more, we’re not going to do much more,'" Lindelof said.
It sounds like he's pretty enthusiastic about the third season, though, because while Lindelof felt season 1 would have been a fine conclusion to the story, he says he really feels he has more to say about these characters next year.
The Leftovers was picked up for a third season by HBO last week despite the show's relatively disappointing ratings, as we previously reported. Despite a loss of viewers between seasons, the most recent stretch of episodes has seen an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and fans.
