All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman is heading to Broadway. Chapman was acquired by the New York Yankees in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
According to USA Today, the Reds will get minor leaguers pitchers Caleb Cotham and Rookie Davis and infielders Eric Jagielo and Tony Renda in the trade. Chapman was suppose to go to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Dodgers backed out of the deal after Chapman was accused of domestic violence. The police report of the incident says that Chapman choked his girlfriend, shoved her against a wall, fired a handgun eight times in his garage, and punched out the window of his SUV. No arrests have been made. Major League Baseball is currently investigating the incident and Chapman could be suspended under the league’s new domestic violence policy, CBS New York/Associated Press notes.
Chapman, who defected from Cuba in 2009, was with the Reds for the last six seasons. He is eligible for free agency at the end of the season next year. This year he had a 1.63 ERA with 116 strikeouts and 146 saves, according to ESPN.
Chapman becomes the Yankees third closer, joining Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances.
