Zack Greinke signs mega-deal with Arizona Diamondbacks

Free-agent pitcher Zack Greinke agreed to a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday night.

According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the deal is for six years and $206 million. Greinke had been looking for a deal with an average annual value of $31.5 million or $32 million. There were questions on whether Greinke would stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers or go to the San Francisco Giants, but the Diamondbacks were the ones that swooped in at the last moment and stole him.

Geinke’s deal includes deferred money and has the highest yearly average in baseball history at $34.4 million, topping the $31 million average that David Price got for signing with the Boston Red Sox, the Associated Press notes.

"We made a very strong offer to retain Zack but clearly he found a deal that fit better for him and his family," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said in a statement on Friday. "We are now hard at work on our alternatives. We wish Zack, Emily and Bode all the bet going forward."

Greinke opted out of his six-year, $147 million contract with the Dodgers in November. There was three years and $71 million left on the contract. He was 19-3 and led the majors with a 1.66 ERA, the lowest in 20 years, and had a 0.84 WHIP, according to ESPN. He was 51-15 in three years with the Dodgers. Greinke is 142-93 with a 3.35 ERA in his 12-year career.

The Dodgers made the playoffs this year but lost to the New York Mets in the National League Division Series. The Diamondbacks were 79-83 and finished third in the NL West.
