Disney, the studio that knows best that what isn’t broken doesn’t need to be fixed, has unsurprisingly delayed Star Wars: Episode VIII until December 2017.
The original plan was to have Episode VIII take the Star Wars franchise back to its traditional May release dates. But obviously, someone at Disney decided that this would be a really silly idea, because Star Wars: The Force Awakens just became the biggest film in North American history, despite a December release. Rather than try to rush director Rian Johnson to get Episode VIII out early, it’s better to give him a few extra months.
Disney has now scheduled Episode VIII for Dec. 15, 2017. That will be nearly two years to the day that The Force Awakens opens and a year after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters. In other words, Disney is ready to turn December into “Annual Star Wars Month.”
Also, don't complain about having to wait longer than expected for Episode VIII. When the Original and Prequel Trilogies were coming out, we had to wait three years for each new movie. (Oh, and there was 16 years between the Original Trilogy and Prequels, plus 10 years between the Prequels and The Force Awakens.)
Production for Episode VIII will start in London next month. Johnson (Looper) is writing and directing. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman are producing. The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams (who regrets turning the job down) is among the executive producers.
The Force Awakens is up to $861.3 million in North America alone, making it the first film ever to hit over $800 million domestically. It has grossed $1.8 billion worldwide.
