This week’s column talks about a throng of varying film genres such as comedic animation, romantic drama and action/fantasy, each widely popular genres for moviegoers.
Zootopia is an animated film about a clever fox and a rabbit, who is also a police officer, as they team up to solve a crime and form a bond that makes them become friends in the process. Knight of Cups tells the tale of a screenwriter, living in Los Angeles, who attempts to make sense of the bizarre events surrounding him. Finally, X-Men: Apocalypse depicts the awakening of the very first mutant, Apocalypse, and how the young X-Men work to stop his nefarious plans against the human race.
All three movies will certainly appeal to fans of each motion picture’s genre, making them race to their nearest theater on each flick’s opening day. In addition, all three films have characters fighting against something or someone, a classic cinematic convention.
Zootopia is a Disney animated comedy featuring the voices of Idris Elba, Ginnifer Goodwin (Once Upon A Time), Jason Bateman, Academy Award winning actor J. K. Simmons, Academy Award winning actress Octavia Spencer, Bonnie Hunt, Grammy-winning singer Shakira and Tommy “Tiny” Lister. The movie’s plot is set in the animated city of Zootopia, where a female rabbit named Judy Hopps (Goodwin), the first female member of the city’s police department, must team up with a con artist fox named Nick Wilde (Bateman) to solve a crime and prove herself to her fellow animal officers. The trailer illustrates how during their adventure, the two animals become friends and learn that all animals, whether predator or prey, can live in harmony. It opens in theaters on Friday, March 4.
Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups is a romantic drama starring Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Michael Wincott, Wes Bentley and Teresa Palmer. The film revolves around a screenwriter, living in LA, who tries to understand the bizarre events encircling him. The drama’s plot presents a screenwriter living in Los Angeles named Rick (Bale), who becomes engulfed in an unusual barrage of occurrences and images and all the while he’s trying to make sense of what he’s witnessing. The motion picture’s trailer shows Rick moving about the town, interacting with different people and observing some very odd events that happen in the “City of Angels.” It also opens in theaters on Friday, March 4.

X-Men: Apocalypse is a continuation of the story of the beginnings of the X-Men starring Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Olivia Munn (The Newsroom), Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult and James McAvoy. In this installment, the young X-Men are determined to stop the very first mutant named Apocalypse, who has awoke and his deadly plans to “cleanse” our civilization and create a “better one.” The actioner’s trailer displays phenomenal special effects as the X-Men put their powers to the ultimate test in order to defeat Apocalypse and his team of equally powerful mutants, who are intent on destroying the world as we know it and remaking it as they sit fit. It opens in theaters on Friday, May 27.
