‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ recap: “Charlie Catches a Leprechaun”

10:00 a.m. on a Wednesday. Philadelphia, PA.

St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow, and Dennis is presenting an idea to The Gang in order to make Paddy’s Pub relevant again. Dennis has the idea of a mobile bar experience called the Paddy’s Wagon. The wagon will pick you up and have quick bar service and a fun party atmosphere. The Gang quickly debates the history of St. Patrick’s Day, and Charlie and Mac decide they want to just hang at the bar, with Charlie determined to catch a leprechaun.

The Paddy’s Wagon is up and running, and Dennis is trying to explain to Dee and Frank how it works. This should be great. Frank has his pistol. Dee has started drinking. What could go wrong? Dennis tries his first attempt at recruiting some young guys into the wagon. Dee fails with another character, and some flaws in the system inadvertently lead to them kidnapping and robbing these guys. They drop them off outside of town, trying to justify it by saying they gave them a truly authentic experience.

Charlie and Mac are getting the bar ready for St. Patty’s Day. Mac tells Charlie to stop drinking green paint, while he goes to set up his glue traps for the leprechaun. The bar is later packed, and Mac hopes the bar will adopt the “Irish honor system.” They go into the basement and discover a little man dressed as a leprechaun. They decide to interrogate the leprechaun in order to find out where his pot of gold is.

The Paddy’s Wagon continues to struggle. They haven’t made any money today. They pick up two young girls and a group of older adults. We get two more of Dee’s stereotypical Irish characters, along with two more kidnappings and robberies. They end up dropping all of these people just outside of town when Dee suggests maybe they should just switch to the car service idea. Frank and Dennis agree, and Frank ends up tricking both Dennis and Dee, stranding them outside of town. Well done, Frank.

Charlie and Mac are torturing the leprechaun, and the little man finally admits he is a leprechaun, just for his own safety. He tells them that his pot of gold is located at the bottom of the rainbow. Mac takes this literally, meaning it is located at a gay bar called The Rainbow. Mac goes alone, while Charlie continues his quest for the truth.

St. Patrick’s Day is coming to an end. Dennis and Dee return to Paddy’s to find it empty and Frank passed out. He accidentally destroyed the Paddy’s Wagon. They go to the basement and find Charlie drinking green paint and torturing the leprechaun. Mac returns from The Rainbow with a bag of wallets from the leprechaun. He had apparently been pit-pocketing the guests. The Gang decides to keep everyone’s money that they stole today and consider this a one-time only St. Patty’s tradition.

The episode ends with them dropping off the “leprechaun” outside of town. Charlie thinks he sees the leprechaun fly away. Dee tells him to stop drinking green paint…
