'The Purge: Election Year' TV spot asks you to keep America great (Video)

The Purge: Election Year's marketing is in full swing, and last night Universal aired a new TV spot during the GOP debate.

The commercial takes the form of a fake political advertisement encouraging viewers to do their civic duty and purge this July, as a number of citizens with "I Purged" stickers speak to the audience. The ad also tells us to not let our freedoms be taken away, a reference to the horror film's plot of an anti-Purge movement.

The Purge franchise takes place in a world where, for 12 hours once a year, all crime is made legal. The idea is that this allows society to let out all its primal urges, and thus America enjoys peace and prosperity for the remainder of the year. In reality, though, it's heavily implied that the Purge is really the government's way of eliminating poor people who can't afford to protect themselves.

In The Purge: Election YearSenator Charlene Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) runs for president and promises to eliminate the Purge once and for all, but she immediately becomes a target as the U.S. government attempts to keep the tradition alive. Frank Grillo will return to reprise his character from The Purge: Anarchy.

Check out the first trailer for Election Year via Universal Studio's official YouTube channel. The movie hits theaters on July 1.
