Reese Witherspoon explains why she changed roles in Hollywood

Reese Witherspoon has undergone a complete career transformation in recent years. She has been going after stronger and more complex acting roles, along with producing films like Gone Girl. Witherspoon opened up about what inspired her to change: a terrible script experience that took place four years ago.

It was during a roundtable discussion with Entertainment Weekly, which also featured Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Banks and Eva Longoria, that Witherspoon discussed the experience.

“About four years ago I got sent an awful, terrible script and this male star was starring in it, and there was a girlfriend part," the Wild star said. "And I thought, 'You've got to be kidding me. No, I'm not interested.' They said, ‘Well, this actress is chasing it, that actress is chasing it.’ Like, three Oscar winners and two huge box-office leading ladies. And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s where we’re at? This is where we’re at? You’re fighting to be the girlfriend in a dumb comedy? For what?’ And by the way, two Oscar winners did it. I was like, ‘I’ve got to do something.’”

Witherspoon has been focusing on acquiring content that puts females front and center in unique roles. She has also spearheaded the #AskHerMore effort on the red carpet at major events. She wanted reporters to ask female interviewees more than just about what she is wearing.
