Sam Smith gets put in his place by screenwriter Dustin Lance Black after claiming he's the first openly gay man to win an Oscar

Sam Smith mentioned in his Oscars speech for winning Best Original Song that he might be the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award, but screenwriter Dustin Lance Black quickly put him in his place.

An emotional Smith, who accepted the award with Jimmy Napes for the Spectre theme “Writing’s On the Wall,” said he read somewhere that no gay man has won an Oscar.

“I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen which said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar," he said. "If this is the case, even if it isn't the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”

But Black reminded him that he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the film Milk seven years ago. He posted a video of himself accepting the award and also warned him to stop texting his fiancé, Tom Daley.
