‘Bates Motel’ recap episode 403: ‘Til Death Do You Part’

On Monday’s episode of Bates Motel, Norma and Romero take the plunge while Norman tries to adjust to Pine View.

Norma peers into Norman’s empty room. She’s crying.

A nurse approaches Norman at Pine View. He questions her about the hospital.

Romero meets Norma at the courthouse. He tells her she’s doing the right thing for Norman. They get married. Romero has a diamond ring for her, but she didn’t think to get a ring for him. Norma is clearly affected by the kiss.

After the wedding, Romero says he’ll be over after work with his things. She’s surprised. He reminds her that he has to move in so things look real. He doesn’t want to lose his job for cutting legal corners.

Dylan and Emma take a walk at the Portland hospital. Dylan tells her he’s going to fire Gunner and get out of the weed growing business. He wants to do something better with his life.

Norman asks the nurse how long he’ll be there. She says it’s different for everyone.

Norman talks to his new doctor. He says he’s only there because his mother wants him to be. He says his mother is the one who really needs help, but then stops talking for the rest of the session.

Norma tries to call Norman at the hospital, but no contact is allowed for the first 72 hours. She leaves a message that she loves him.

Romero rings the bell and brings in his things. Norma is nervous. Romero says a buddy has offered them the best table at his restaurant for a free dinner. Norma is upset that she’s married for a third time and it’s not even real. She doesn’t want to pretend to be happy. Romero says that’s what alcohol is for and tells her to get dressed.

Norman sits down for the communal dinner. Another teen, Julian, sits across from him and tries to talk to him. Julian is excited to meet someone he doesn’t think is a “nut-bar.” Julian says he’s there because his parents think he’s annoying. Norman feels a connection.

At dinner, Norma and Romero drink and discuss their previous marriages. She asks him who he sleeps with. He admits that he sees several people. She asks if she knows them. He says it’s a small town.

When they get home, Norma is drunk and Romero has to help her into bed. They’re both happy. Romero tucks her in and heads off to sleep in another room. She tells him she’s still keeping her name.

The next morning, Norma finds a note that Romero is filling in the pit as a wedding present. When she leaves the house, one of the construction workers hands her an earring they found by the pit. It belongs to Emma’s mother.

When Dylan gets back to the barn, Gunner quits and says he’s going to California. Dylan is upset that he didn’t give him any notice. He calls Emma, who reminds him that he was going to fire Gunner. Dylan’s drug-running neighbor appears at the door. He’s looking for Caleb, who beat him and left him for dead. Dylan doesn’t know how to find him.

Romero brings boxes to his house to pack up more things. A woman is waiting for him. She says she’s looking for socks she left there. She tries to seduce him, but he tells her he’s married. She’s upset. She asks him whether she’s going to be implicated in laundering Bob Harris’ money. Romero tells her that she’s just a tangent and if she doesn’t call attention to herself, she’ll be fine. She leaves his key.

After the woman leaves, Romero finds his dresser drawers open that she’d been rummaging through. He goes to his hiding place in the floor. The money is still there. He packs it in a bag.

Norma comes home and hears banging in the basement. She investigates and finds Romero. He says he was looking for the washing machine. She asks if he’s telling the truth. He tells her he was hiding money, but she thinks he’s just being funny.

Dylan comes to Norma’s and fills her in on Emma’s progress. He asks why Romero was there. Norma tells him they got married for the insurance. Dylan tells her guys don’t get married just to share insurance. He says Romero is a good guy. Norma says she doesn’t like Romero that way. She’s worried about Norman. Dylan says everything will be okay.

Norman tells the doctor he has blackouts. The doctor asks about his hallucinations and violent anger. He says his mother has violent tendencies, as well. The doctor tells him he can help him if Norman lets him. Norman says he’s only there because he didn’t want to upset his mother. The doctor asks why he’s mad at her. Norman breaks down in tears and says Norma wants too much. He says she does things and blames it on him. He doesn’t want to hurt her, but he’s scared.

Norma goes to Pine View and asks to talk to Norman. She wants to know that he’s okay. She tells Norman’s doctor it would be good for Norman to see her and know that everything’s all right so he can focus on getting better.

Norma approaches Norman in the lounge. She apologizes for having to admit him but says it’s the best place for him. Norman tells her she needs help. He says he’s disappointed in her for putting him in this position.

Norma comes home upset. She’s afraid of losing Norman forever. Romero holds her. Norma kisses him. He tries to stop her, but she says she’s sure she wants this. He carries her up the stairs.

Norman tries to barge into the doctor’s office, but the staff stops him. The doctor finds him in confinement. Norman tells him that his mother is killing people. The doctor says he’ll have to report it.
