Carnival ship to become first U.S. cruise in over 50 years to travel to Cuba

Since President Obama announced a plan for open diplomacy with Cuba in 2014, the first U.S. cruise voyager in over 50 years will sail to Cuba from Miami, Fla. starting in May.

Carnival will carry 704 passengers for a 7-day trip to Cuba on May 1 on their Adonia ship, CEO Arnold Donald confirmed on March 21.

The three ports of call in Cuba that the ship will sail to every other week are Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba.

“It's an extraordinary day," Donald said in a conference call, LA Times reports. "We are truly honored."

There are 12 requirements for U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba, but Tara Russell, president of Carnival Corp.'s Fathom brand, said they will make it “very easy” for travelers to fill out the necessary paperwork.

The company's announcement comes as President Obama makes a historical trip to Cuba this week.
