Celebrities react to Patty Duke's death on Twitter

Following news that Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke passed away at 69, celebrities have reacted on social media.

Duke, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Helen Keller in the 1962 movie The Miracle Worker, died as a result of sepsis from her ruptured intestine.

Duke’s son, Sean Astin, who is known for his role in The Lord of the Rings movies, posted a statement from his family and added “I love you mom.” Astin’s former costar, Elijah Wood, was one of the first actors to express his condolences.

“My heart goes out to @SeanAstin and the entire family,” he wrote with the hashtag #PattyDuke.

Wood also shared a link to a CrowdRise page started by Astin to raise money for the Patty Duke Mental Health Project. Duke was an advocate for mental health.

Other actors like Patricia Heaton, Kristy Swanson, William Shatner and Titus Welliver took to Twitter to send love to Duke’s family.

Former Charmed co-stars Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan were also quick to express their condolences and recognize Duke’s work.

Other reactions to Duke’s passing include comedian Margaret Cho, fellow Oscar winners Sam Kalidi and Marlee Matlin, wrestler Jerry Lawler and even the Academy Awards’ official Twitter.
