It's a beautiful night outside. There is a light breeze that can hit your face and make you think of summer nights. What's even better on a gorgeous day like this is the fact that the Grease Live! DVD was just released.
Even if you watched Grease as a film, a musical on Broadway or recently watched the live event from Paramount on television, you can now watch Grease Live! on DVD anytime. Grease Live! garnered about 12.2 million viewers when it aired. Don't you want to relive the love story between Danny and Sandy again?
Grease Live! featured a dynamic and fresh ensemble cast and reintroduced the T-Birds and Pink Ladies to a new generation. The event still had the great music, the moments that fans hold dear and the timeless love story.
The star-studded cast includes Julianne Hough (Safe Haven, Dirty Grandpa) as the innocent Sandy; Aaron Tveit (Graceland, Les Miserables) as rough and tough Danny Zuko; Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers, High School Musical) as misunderstood bad girl Rizzo; Keke Palmer (Scream Queens) as Pink Lady Marty Maraschino; Carlos PenaVega (Big Time Rush) as Kenickie and Grammy Award-nominated singer Carly Rae Jepsen as Pink Lady and beauty school dropout Frenchy. There are appearances by Joe Jonas, Mario Lopez as Vince Fontaine and Boyz II Men as Teen Angel. Plus Didi Conn (Frenchy) and Barry Pearl (Doody) from the 1978 film make appearances.
Grease Live!'s director Thomas Kail (Hamilton) pulled out all the stops to make this three-hour event a lively reimagined production that got better and better as the show progressed. Kail crafted the event by going big, with a monster set full of innovative staging that embodied the notion of the theater. He brought our imagination back to what is simple in film, namely the transition between scenes. From the start when Jessie J strutted through the streets and moved through dressing rooms and across sets to the final moment where the whole group of kids come together, the live event captivated the audience. The only malfunction that didn't take much from the event is taken out on the DVD. During the live event there was an audio foul-up during a major moment, which thankfully you don't have to relive on DVD.
The event was produced by Paramount Television and Marc Platt (Wicked, Into The Woods) executive produced. Tony Award-nominated director Thomas Kail (Hamilton, In The Heights) was director of stage direction and Alex Rudzinski (Dancing With The Stars) was the live television director. Broadway writers Robert Cary and Jonathan Tolins wrote the live television adaptation.
Julianne Hough was a sincere Sandy and truly embodied the role during the "You're The One That I Want" scene. Aaron Tveit's vocals were great in all of his Danny songs, but he didn't hold a candle to John Travolta's confident lady killer attitude.
There were many moments that shined for the entire cast. Keke Palmer's "Freddy My Love," Jordan Fisher's "Those Magic Changes" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "All I Need is An Angel," which was written as an original for the live production, were all stand-out moments.
Boyz II Men's rendition of "Beauty School Dropout" was a remarkable take on the classic. Frankie Avalon was great in the 1978 film, but fans must thank the creators of Grease Live! for going from one angel to three angels with the casting of the Grammy Award-winning R&B group.
The biggest hit in this live event would have to be Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo. Hudgens' father passed away a day before the show, which compelled the audience to pay closer attention to the High School Musical alumna. She belted out "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" for her big solo and her version was riveting. Her overall performance was anything but forgettable.
The entire Grease Live! event is anything but forgettable.
The release of the DVD is presented with a bunch of bonus features, so be sure to purchase the Grease Live! DVD as of March 8.
