Much to his surprise, a North Carolina man was arrested on Tuesday, March 22 for failing to return a VHS tape of Tom Green’s Freddy Got Fingered 14 years ago.
James Meyers was pulled over for a broken tailgate while driving his daughter to school, but he soon learned he had committed the crime of failing to return rental property.
Meyers said he thought the cop was joking when he told him he could drop off his daughter but had to report to the police station that same day. He told WSOC-TV, he has a April 27 court date for the crime. “For the first time I got put in handcuffs,” he said.
"They’re not focusing on the crimes I think they should be focusing on,” he added. “That hour the cops sat out there with me, the hour and a half I was down in the magistrate's office could have been spent somewhere else.”
Tom Green caught wind of the story on Twitter and called Meyers, offering to pay the $200 fine. He told Daily News, “If it’s 200 bucks of course I’ll pay it for him, just for the principle of the thing.”
I just saw this and I am struggling to believe it is real. https://t.co/GrTXoUj29X
