Today in film news, the Tomb Raider reboot has finally found its lead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alicia Vikander has been cast as Laura Croft in the upcoming film based on the popular video game series. Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is directing the project, which is not a continuation of the two Angelina Jolie movies from the early 2000s. Star Wars' lead Daisy Ridley had been rumored to be playing Croft, but that sadly did not pan out.
Vikander, who won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role in The Danish Girl, will star alongside Tom Cruise in the upcoming Mummy reboot.
Well, that was fast: Will Ferrell will no longer be portraying Ronald Reagan in an upcoming movie. Written by Mike Rosolio, the new film Reagan takes place during the former president's second term as he suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and an intern tries to convince him he's only playing the president in a movie. It received widespread criticism for making light of a serious illness and a representative for Ferrell has confirmed to Fox News that the comedian is no longer pursuing the project.
Paul Rudd will star in the upcoming World War II thriller The Catcher and the Spy, according to Deadline. Based upon the book by Nicholas Dawidoff, the film will tell the story of Moe Berg, real-life baseball player who worked as a spy for the U.S. government. The film will be directed by Ben Lewin (The Sessions) and written by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan). Normally a comedic actor, Rudd made a dramatic turn last year when he joined the Marvel universe in Ant-Man. He will reprise that role in Captain America: Civil War and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Just in time for the upcoming reboot, the original Ghostbusters is heading back to theaters. According to Entertainment Weekly, Fathom Events will be showing the classic 1984 comedy on June 8, the anniversary of the first film's release. They also have a second night planned for June 12. Sony Pictures' remake, starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, hits theaters on July 15.
Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson shared a few pictures from the set on his Tumblr page. This was done to celebrate the crew getting halfway through shooting. The photos don't reveal a whole lot, but that won't prevent us Star Wars geeks from over analyzing them. We get a glimpse at an X-Wing, inside of which appears to be a new character. We also see a First Order operative in a scene that, like The Force Awakens, looks quite visually similar to the original three movies.
