TV News Wrap Up: 'Twin Peaks' casting and reduced commercials for 'Saturday Night Live'

In TV news we have a bizarre update on the Twin Peaks revival. A cast list has been revealed and it includes Michael Cera, Eddie Vedder, Jim Belushi, Robert Forster, David Duchovny, Tim Roth, Matthew Lillard, Josh McDermitt and Trent Reznor (yes, that Trent Reznor). Showtime released a full list of 217 cast members, as you can see on Entertainment Weekly, and it seriously looks like a bunch of random celebrities were just picked out of a hat. All of these actors join Kyle McLachlan, Naomi Watts, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Amanda Seyfried. Twin Peaks is expected to air in 2017.

Sick of sitting through commercials during Saturday Night Live? Good news: NBC plans to scale back the number of ads during SNL by 30 percent next season, according to AdAge. This will be done by cutting out two commercial breaks per episode.

Over the weekend, BBC announced the new Doctor Who companion: Pearl Mackie will be portraying Bill on the 10th season of the long-running science fiction series, as the network revealed in this promo video. Filming begins next month, although new episodes won't begin airing until 2017. It's not yet clear if Mackie will be featured in the Christmas special, which will be the only piece of Doctor Who content we get in 2016.

Still getting over that shocking Melisandre twist from Sunday night's Game of Thrones? Wondering how it was accomplished? Director Jeremy Podeswa revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the crew made use of prosthetic makeup and a body double to make Melisandre look the way she did in that final scene. When asked to clarify exactly how old the character is supposed to be, Podeswa said that they didn't have a specific number in mind, but they wanted to express that "she could be ancient."

NBC has announced the cast of their upcoming musical event Hairspray Live! According to The Hollywood Reporter, the musical will star Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle and Harvey Fierstein as Edna Turnblad. Fierstein played this character in the original musical, for which he won a Tony for Best Actor. This will be NBC's latest live show after Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz. Hairspray Live! airs on Dec. 17.

If you were a fan of Matt Harmon in the first season of Fuller House, good news: John Brotherton has just been promoted to a series regular, according to Deadline. TV Line reported last week that in Season 2, Matt will begin dating Cristal, a hot yoga instructor, presumably in an attempt to make D.J. jealous and eventually win her over. Season 2 of Fuller House will premiere on Netflix in 2017.
