'Blindspot' recap: 'Why Await Life's End'

Things fell apart as Jane’s mysterious background was pieced closer together in the season finale of Blindspot.

The episode opened with Jane in the shower, washing off Mayfair’s blood, while taking in what had just happened. At the same time, Weller consulted Dr. Borden on his father’s dying words, inquiring whether he had been lucid or telling the truth. Borden informed Weller that he would be the person who would know best and to trust his gut.

Later, Weller went looking for Jane, only to discover that she was not home. Instead, Jane broke into Oscar’s old place. She discovered a picture of herself and Oscar, receiving a flashback of a time when the two were together. The flashback revealed that Jane’s part in the “mission” had been her idea and that Oscar did not want her to take the “poison.” The nature of the mission and the poison remain unknown.

Meanwhile, FBI agent Allie Report questioned Zapata, Reade and Patterson on Mayfair’s whereabouts, informing them that she had broken her parole. The three remained adamant that they had not heard from her.

After contacting his sister, she and Weller returned to their childhood home to investigate the fort in the backyard, hoping to not find the body of the Taylor Shaw he knew as a child. Tensions rose the longer the two drove.

With a phone number and favor, Jane received help from Anna in tracing the number she had been given in case of emergencies. A man answered the phone, refusing to help Jane. However, he remained on the line long enough for the two to zoom in on his location.

Fearing the worst, Zapata and Reade traveled to the address Mayfair had requested from them and realized they were way in over their heads. They recruited Patterson, who, after some initial hurt feelings over being uninformed of the situation, agreed to help. On the floor of the building, she discovered residual blood. And a lot of it. The three took it back to the lab for testing.

Back at his old home, Weller and his sister began to dig under the fort where the two and Taylor Shaw played back when they were kids. He was relieved to discovered that nothing was buried in the ground there.

Meanwhile, Jane arrived at the location she received from Anna. After escaping an initial trap, Jane told the man that there was an emergency and the Cade was alive. The man gave her an address, informing her to get there as soon as possible for her own safety. She ignored his request, however, when she discovered that Oscar would not be the one on location. Later, while tailing Oscar, he tased her, knocking her unconscious.

Back at the lab, test results revealed the blood discovered on the floor of the building was Mayfair’s. In search of answers, Zapata, Reade and Patterson broke into Mayfair’s house and discovered a bureau, locked under an unknown code. Thankfully, Reade discovered the Chinese zodiac signs of each of the agents on a lower part of the wall, revealing the code to be the birth years of each member of the team. The bureau opened, with a USB key inside. Following their return to the lab, the three discovered that the key was encrypted, with a riddle posing the question of “for whom the bell tolls.”

In a state of relief, Weller shared drinks with his sister, relieving their childhood days back at the house. However, while drinking, Weller had a dark epiphany. He took off in the car towards Fort Boone, the camp the three had frequented as kids.

Waking up in an abandoned barn, Jane discovered after a few moments that she was tied to a chair. Apologizing profusely for the mission going awry, Oscar informed Jane that he planned to wipe her memory again. While begging for her own mind, Oscar broke shattering news to Jane: she never really was Taylor Shaw.

Around the same time, Weller arrived at Fort Boone and began furiously digging. After some time, Weller discovered exactly what he had feared. Taylor Shaw was buried there and had been dead for 25 years.

Meanwhile, Oscar informed Jane that the DNA switch between herself and Taylor Shaw had only been part of phase one of the mission. Phase one included disposing of Mayfair, assuring Weller’s promotion to take her place and incorporating Jane as Taylor Shaw to assure future manipulation. When pressed, Oscar would not reveal phase two.

Right before Oscar was able to inject Jane with a memory suppressant, however, she broke free of her bonds and attacked Oscar. During their struggle, fire set to the barn, raising the stakes. Almost by accident, Jane impaled Oscar just in time to escape the burning building. As she exited the scene, she spraypainted “For Marcos” on Oscar’s truck, paying homage to the man he had murdered.

While working on the encryption, the puzzle led to the name “David,” revealing that the code was intended for Patterson. Working with the letters she had, Patterson discovered and entered the code: “Imsorry.” A folder titled “Orion” opened and began showing files on the screen, overwhelming the computer with information. The three stared in amazement, taking in what they had just gotten themselves into.

Season one came to a close as Jane entered her home to discover a drunk and vengeful Weller. He told her of what he had found that day and without waiting for further explanation he pointed his gun at Jane. Weller cuffed Jane, placing her under arrest, as credits began to roll.
