The May 23 episode of The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore opened with a quick news story about a news anchor at KRON 4 News accidentally stealing a story on Space Jam 2 from their sports anchor. The sports anchor became highly offended with this error, calling out the news anchor. The conversation grew deeply personal, with the sports anchor bringing both of their mothers into the argument.
In retaliation, Wilmore seemingly introduced a new segment to the show, Rory’s Local News Screwups. Instead of being an actual segment, however, contributor Rory Albanese just yelled at Wilmore for taking his story, comically emulating the situation at KRON 4 News.
Following the previous “segment,” Wilmore introduced another Backlash 2016: The Unblackening. This Backlash concerned Trump, particularly his wavering viewpoints on gun control policies. Recently, Trump had vowed to protect the 2nd Amendment, while preventing stricter gun control laws. However, back in 2000, Trump had written a book where he expressed the exact opposite argument. Just as Wilmore was attempting to argue that a person’s opinion can change over time, the show cut to a recent clip of Trump on Fox news, where he appeared to change his mind once again, this time mid sentence.
To help with the confusion, Wilmore brought in fake Donald Trump to settle the issue. Instead, “Trump” remained adamant that he never changes positions, but that he changes positions sometimes. The skit ended with very little accomplished and a brief music segment involving the sale of “Trump guns.”
Next, Wilmore introduced a new segment: Robin and Holly’s That’s What She Said Award, dedicated to outstanding female action the news. The award went to representative Julie Stokes, for calling out another representative for being “utterly disrespectful” and “disgusting” when he suggested a weight and age limit on strippers. The segment was littered with various that’s what she said jokes, with Robin frequently interrupting Holly at every opportunity.
The night’s panel included Rory Albanese, Grace Parra and special guest Jen Bartels. The conversation concerned prostitution, particularly NYC’s recent movement to legalize the act. While the panelists initially were for the idea, all agreed that decriminalization would work better than legalization, giving the power to sex workers rather than their pimps. Conversations remained informal, but rather serious, paying respect to delicate nature of the subject at the close of the night’s show.
