‘@Midnight’ recap: ‘Nick Swardson; Horatio Sanz; Mary Lynn Rajskub’

Returning from its two-week interim period, June 14’s episode of At Midnight With Chris Hardwick pitted special guests Nick Swardson, Horatio Sanz and Mary Lynn Rajskub against each other in a battle of wits.

In the first challenge of the night, Rapid Refresh, Hardwick posed the question of what’s a worse merger than LinkedIn and Clippy, the Microsoft office assistant and a few other photo and video related questions. At the end of the round Rajskub had 500 points and Sanz and Swardson had 300 points.

Moving on to Hashtag Wars, and in honor of the Tony’s, the night’s hashtag was #babybroadway shows. Big point winners were “Arthur Miller’s ‘The Luncheable” and “Sweeny Toddler.” Once again, Rajskub swept the round. Closing the challenge, Hardwick posed the same question to the Twitter community. Here are some of the highlights.

In R/not the Onion, which focused on newslines surprisingly not written by the Onion, Hardwick provided the guests with real headlines, asking what they believed was the first line of the article.

The articles covered were “One Person Arrested in DC Twerking Incident,” “ Closed Vegan Strip Club to Become Homeless Shelter,” “Pope Francis Drops Second Single off New Album,” “Texas Teacher Drew a Penis on Student’s Class Assignment” and “Trump Tells 10-year-old That ‘Space is Terrific, but Potholes are More Important.’” The three guests did not disappoint, providing clever leades for each headline. Once again, Rajskub came out on top.

The next challenge, “Take a Number 2,” centered on the recently announced Passion of the Christ 2.  Before the break, Hardwick asked for the three to come up with a line from the trailer. Swardson won this round, finally surpassing Rajskub for the lead.

The next challenge, Unduly Noted, focused on misguided tweets by various TV networks. In sixty seconds, Hardwick asked the three to come up with as many bad network comments as possible. At the close of the round, Sanz was eliminated with 2450, having come in third place.

Finally, Hardwick wiped the boards, pitting Rajskub and Swardson against each other in "For the Win." Presenting the two with Steph Curry’s “boring-ass shoes,” Hardwick asked the two what graffiti would prevent further criticism of the pair. The two answers were, in order,  “Straight fire-ea “ and “My other shoe is your ass.” The first won with the most applause, with Nick Swardson winning the internet.
