‘America’s Got Talent’ recap: ‘Auditions’

Auditions continued on this week’s episode of America’s Got Talent.

First up were mother and son pair, Alla and Daniel. The unlikely duo performed a ballroom dance to “Moves Like Jagger,” surprising and impressing the judges with their combined technique. Receiving four yeses, the two moved on to the next round.

Next, 47-year-old Jonathan performed with an acrobatics routine. Displaying an unusual flexibility, it soon became obvious that the businessman was also a contortionist. Though mildly disturbed, the judges could not ignore Jonathan’s talent, sending him through with a unanimous vote.

A rather large group of music students, Musicality, were the next to take the stage. In a classic Glee scenario, the group performed a One Direction medley, touching the audience with their unique choice and vocals. The judges praised the group for the hard work they had put in to get there, receiving four yeses.

A 63-year-old comedienne Tita followed Musicality.  Determined to bring laughter to the stage quite literally, she led the audience through various different laughs. While she received three buzzers, at least two were pressed by Mel B. While amused, the judges did not send Tita through to the next round.

Family band Nikki, Ryan and Jaclyn Edgar auditioned next. A former Christian vocalist with a record deal, Nikki lost her contract to a teenage pregnancy, earning a family in its stead. Together, the three performed a heartwarming rendition of “Stand by You.” Confident in the family’s talent, the judges unanimously sent them through.

Next up was “America’s oldest” daredevil, Gary. In a nerve wracking routine, Gary stacked several chairs on top of each other, climbing to the top and back down, all while performing various acrobatics. Impressed and on the edge of their seats, Gary received four yeses as well.

Argentinian rhythm group, Malevo, took the stage shortly after. Equipped with tap shoes, wooden boards and some drums, the group mesmerized both the judges and the audience with their routine. Suggesting the group had the potential to be the next Riverdance, the judges enthusiastically sent the group to the next round.

A 30-year-old stand-up comedian named Danny performed next. While entertaining prior to his act, things became awkward when the audience disliked the routine. Instead of adjusting his material, however, Danny made things worse by calling the audience out for booing. The judges criticized Danny for this, sending him on his way.

Following Danny was another stand-up comedian, DJ. Despite his hearing condition preventing him from properly gauging audience reaction, DJ quickly won over the audience, easing the tensions of the previous act. With four yeses, he moved on to the next round.

Up next was 82-year-old vocalist, John, who took to Karaoke following his retirement. In a surprise twist, he broke out into Drowning Pool’s “Bodies.” While slightly terrifying to witness, John was sent through with three yeses, with the judges believing that audiences would like him.

Dancers and technicians Eleven Play performed next, accompanied by a series of drones. In synch with the dancer’s movements, the drones perfectly complimented the routine. The company received a standing ovation from Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel, moving on to the next round with four yeses.

Closing out the night was 12-year-old singer/songwriter Grace. Singing an original song, Grace performed with a maturity beyond her years, giving off a strong Indie vibe. Referring to her as a “little miracle,” Mandel hit his golden buzzer, sending Grace through to the live show.
