On June 17, Island Records released Jake Bugg’s third album, On My One. The record impresses with a wide range of styles, departing often from his usual blues-rock.
While Bugg’s new album starts with the bluesy “On My One,” we quickly discover that this album will be different from the rest. The second tune, “Gimme the Love” rolls on an almost techno beat and “Never Wanna Dance” is slow and trippy. “Bitter Salt” uses an electronica chorus but the most bizarre departure is definitely “Ain’t No Rhyme” in which Bugg raps the whole way through. These songs are completely out of character for Bugg but manage to be listenable all the same.
Those who enjoy Bugg’s western feel will appreciate songs like “The Love We’re Hoping For” where he strums a twangy guitar, and “Put Out the Fire” which drives along like a freight train in a manner that would please Johnny Cash. “Livin’ Up Country” is appropriately named for its ‘70s country quality and the album ends on a rocking blues number called “Hold On You” that lives up to his past tunes.
Three albums in, Bugg is adjusting and expanding his musical tastes. While On My One changes Bugg’s usual sound, it’s worth listening to. Through it, we glimpse a bit of where future albums might lead. Some might lament the change, but Bugg manages to astonish us with his eclectic musical prowess.
