‘Don’t Breathe’ dethrones ‘Suicide Squad’ as the box office champ

Suicide Squad has as finally been dethroned after dominating the box office. The new suspense thriller Don’t Breathe took the top spot at the box office with a $26.1 million opening weekend. This was much better than expected and I’m curious to see if this film can repeat at number one.

Suicide Squad took second place with $12.1 million and pushed its total domestic gross to $282.9 million after 24 days in theaters. Kubo and the Two Strings is in third place with $7.9 million and Sausage Party is in fourth place with $7.7 million and has crossed $80 million domestically reports Box Office Mojo.

The other new release Mechanic: Resurrection struggled to find a solid audience after grossing $7.5 million during its first weekend and I see this film quickly falling out of the top five. War Dogs brought in $7.2 million and is just under $30 million domestically. I’m surprised this film didn’t find a larger audience. Bad Moms is closing in on $100 million domestically while Jason Bourne is closing in on $150 million domestically.

Weekend gross by Distributor:

Sony Pictures: $34.4 million (+18%)

Warner Bros: $20.1 million (-16.5%)

Paramount Pictures: $9.7 million (-10.1%)

Universal: $9 million (-4.8%)

Disney: $8.6 million (-4.2%)

Focus Features: $7.9 million (-4.7%)

Summit Premiere: $7.5 million (n/a)

STX Entertainment: $5.8 million (-2.3%)
