'Sausage Party' review: More bizarre than you could ever imagine

It's hard to put into words what Sausage Party really is. It's a hard-R animated comedy about food learning about their demise. It's also one of the most "who in God's name signed off on this" movies in the past decade.

Not because it's an R-rated animated movie, but because this is one of the most blatantly stereotypical and legitimately shocking movies in a long time.

Every line of dialogue and situation is played for maximum shock value. An Islamic flatbread doesn't get along with a Jewish bagel. The villain is a douche, as in, an actual douche, who essentially rapes a juice box for energy at one point.

The movie is truly something that should be witnessed with a large crowd. Sitting with a couple hundred strangers while food sex is happening was worth the ticket price. Whether the movie will work without the social aspect remains to be seen. I was enjoying myself witnessing this with others, but not because the movie is in any way good.

The humor, while outrageous and enjoyable for that reason, isn't exactly clever. Many jokes are just "oh they went there" instead of actually having the material to be funny. Others completely fail when the shock value is either to the point of actually being awkward or when there's nothing supporting the gag but the craziness of it.

The ensemble cast includes Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Nick Kroll, Michael Cera, Bill Hader, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek amid many other Seth Rogen buddy cameos. Every one of them is game, especially Hader, Krumholtz and Norton who truly embrace the jokes of their characters.

The animation also looks solid. Sometimes the design of the film is a bit uninspired, but it suits the movie well enough. Nobody's going to be leaving complaining about the quality of the animation. Besides eating, that's probably the last thing on anybody's mind walking out of the theater.
