My Discount DVD Club is a brand new subscription service on Cratejoy. They mail out two DVDs, plus candy and popcorn for less than the price of a movie ticket. While they are a new club, they’ve worked with retailers for many years and have built up a library of over 3 million movies in stock. They have nine genre categories you can choose from. I’m always on the lookout for date night ideas, so I signed up for the Romantic Comedies box. I’ll give you all the details here.
The club shipment came in the box you see above. It’s a generic white box with their logos pasted to it. While it’s not super special packaging, the fact that they’re not paying for fancy boxes passes the discount onto you for your plan. Plus, you still know immediately who the package is from when you open the box, so it works out fine.
Immediately upon opening the box, I found it full of edible treats. There were Skittles, Laffy Taffy, Starburst, Nerds and Gobstoppers for candy. My fiancé managed to eat most of it the first day leaving me with the few choice items that he doesn’t care for. That amounted to a box of Nerds and a package of Gobstoppers, but it made his day so I can’t complain.
Along with the candy was a bag of Orville Redenbacher’s gourmet popcorn in a pop-up bowl package. We’d never tried the pop-up bowl before, but it was great! Pop up the corn, peel off one end of the plastic casing and it stands right up. We made it a date night and stuffed ourselves with buttery goodness while we watched one of the movies.
I was extremely surprised to find that we had received three movies instead of two in our first box. The co-founder, Danny Schaefer, explained to me that sometimes when they buy in bulk they get titles with only a couple hundred units left over. When that happens, they like to add an extra surprise to as many boxes as possible. Very nice!
The movies I received were I Love You, Beth Cooper, Drillbit Taylor and The Last Word. All three were brand new, still wrapped in plastic. Drillbit Taylor I saw a number of years ago. Silly, but fun. The other two I’d never watched.
I had been wanting to see The Last Word since I spotted it at our local library a few months ago, so that’s what we picked to watch for our date night in. While the subject matter was heavy, it was quirky with some funny parts that shone through. It was an intelligent film with only a hint at a happy ending. We enjoyed it and I was glad to add it to my collection.
I Love You, Beth Cooper is one I wouldn’t have picked out on my own, but I’ll give it a try now that I own it. My fiancé really wants to see it.
Two of the films were labeled strictly with Canadian ratings while the last had both Canadian and American ratings. However, all three are NTSC and play fine on American DVD players, so it makes no difference. The extra film is nice to have and the edible goodies are a nice touch. I really enjoyed this box.
My Discount DVD Club only costs $8.99 per box of two movies. Shipping is included as are any extras that they throw in. The movies are of the older discount variety, but they’re still ones that you want to watch. Each movie on its own would cost you $4-6, plus the cost of the treats on top, so you’re really getting a good deal.
This service is a great excuse for at least one cheap date night in per month. Pick your favorite of the movies, make the popcorn, pour the candy in a bowl and cuddle up on the couch. Not a romantic comedy fan? Try thrillers, action adventure, science fiction, romance, drama, comedy or horror. Or make it a family movie night with children’s films. Any way you do it, you’re in for some fun!
