Renee Zellweger addresses gay rumors surrounding ex-husband Kenny Chesney

More than a decade after Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney split, she is addressing the gay rumors that surrounded him after she cited "fraud" as the reason for ending their short-lived marriage.

The marriage between the Bridget Jones star and the country singer wasn't exactly Britney Spears and Jason Alexander quick, but it was brief. After tying the knot in May 2005, Zellweger filed to have their marriage annulled just four months later and that's when the speculation about Chesney's sexuality began.

In an interview with The Advocate, the actress spoke about what she thought of the rumors.

"That made me sad," she admitted. "It made me sad that somehow people were using that as a way to be cruel and calling someone gay as a pejorative, which has fateful consequences. Of course, there’s the bigger-picture problem of why anyone had to make up a story at all.”

Two years after their separation, the rumors continued so Chesney publicly stated that he wasn't gay.

"It’s not true. Period," he said then. "Maybe I should have come out and said, ‘No, I’m not [gay],’ but I didn’t want to draw any more attention to it. I didn’t have to prove to anybody that I wasn’t [gay]. I didn’t feel like I really did."

Meanwhile Zellweger, who's last movie came out in 2010, has been promoting her latest installment in the Bridget Jones series which is set to hit theaters on Sept. 16.
