Review of Colbie Caillat's upcoming album 'The Malibu Sessions'

Beach goddess Colbie Caillat is releasing her new album The Malibu Sessions on Oct. 7 just in time to support the rest of us while we prepare for the chilly weather. Caillat has perfected creating warm timbres with her voice and guitar that faithfully follows her.

“Gypsy Heart,” the first song on the album and the title of Caillat’s most recent album, eases us into The Malibu Sessions with a catchy melody and nomadic lyrics.

“Goldmine” is an adorable love song that is enhanced with the addition of a whistling, gold miners song that fills in the vocal breaks. “Cruisin’” is a fun, foot-tapping tune with a pretty melody and intimate guitar work. “Only You” makes the listener want to twirl around and feel as in love as Caillat is.

“Never Got Away” pulls away from the endless love that Caillat has been gushing about until now, and makes us realize that all relationships require work. This sentiment continues in “Don’t Wanna Love You” in which the emotion in her voice emulates how unhappily in love she is.

The Malibu Sessions leaves us with “Now,” an optimistic song about working with what you have and living life to the fullest.

The Malibu Sessions is a fun album that deserves a listen, but it could use a bit more variation rhythmically and in terms of subject matter.
