Woody Allen’s new film, Café Society, brings the 1930s to life with glamor and gangsters. The dramedy was released by Lionsgate on DVD and Blu-ray on Oct. 18. It explores how twisted love can be and leaves the audience wondering who to root for.
The movie follows Bobby who moves from New York City to Hollywood to work for his talent agent uncle played by Steve Carell. While there, Bobby falls in love with his uncle’s assistant, but is it truly meant to be? The story follows the interwoven love stories of both Bobby, played by Jesse Eisenberg, and his uncle, as well as Bobby’s family life. The ending will have you wondering what’s wrong and right. Should the characters follow their hearts or do right by those they made promises to?
The film is written, directed and narrated by Woody Allen. As in most of Allen’s films, the story makes use of neurotic humor to explore the themes of love and the human spirit. Eisenberg plays an incredibly interesting character reminiscent to roles Allen would have chosen for himself in his early career. We’re not sure whether to love or hate Vonnie – played by Kristen Stewart, as she breaks hearts without much thought to the feelings of others. While I normally love Carell, his interaction with the film’s love interest doesn’t have much chemistry, though the rest of his portrayal is believable.
In the end, this film isn’t Allen’s best, but it’s still enjoyable. Even with its outlandish plot, it manages to reflect real life which is definitely a marker of his movies. You don’t have to be a Woody Allen fan to enjoy this. As long as you can see the cynical side of love as well as the beauty of it, this film will bring you pleasure.
