Unbox Love October date box subscription unboxing review

Unbox Love is a dating subscription service. They mail out monthly date night activities to do at home with your loved one. Past boxes have included games, candles, recipes, treats, puzzles, paint sets and time capsules. Every month it’s something new. I tried out their October box which was titled “Love is for the Birds.” Here’s what I found inside.

Everything was shipped in the above white box with an Unbox Love sticker sealing it shut. Not the fanciest box, but you still immediately know what it is when you open the mailbox. It was padded inside but unfortunately, a couple of my items arrived damaged. However, I found customer service to be great. They immediately replaced my damaged items, no questions asked and even sent me a fun extra little card game to play with my sweetie. Can’t beat that!

The first things inside the package are two cards that explain how to use the items included for the date. There were four activities altogether.

The first activity in the box includes the above Love photo frame. You’re supposed to go outside in the lingering warm weather and take pictures of you and your sweetie. They also mention the option of placing autumn leaves in the frame, but I felt it was too small for that. We’ll be putting together three wallet-sized selfies and possibly decorating the plain frame with paint or markers.

Also included were post-it notes that read “Today I Love You Because…” The idea is to write little love notes for your partner and hide them to be found over time. I think this is a really cute idea. Just a reminder that your partner loves you unconditionally.

The last card in this picture is a recipe for sugar cookies that you can make with or for your sweetie. It’s not listed as part of the date. It’s just a bonus activity. I haven’t made them yet, but the recipe looks tasty.

Next in the box were makings for snack time. There was a bag of gourmet potato chips and two plastic ice cubes. I believe everyone got a different flavor of chips. Ours were salted Belgium which had cocoa mixed in. They weren’t overly sweet but were delicious.

The ice cubes don’t actually get cold. Instead, when you place them in your drink they blink LED colors. One of our ice cubes was damaged and wouldn’t turn off. Unbox Love replaced both of them with a slightly larger version with rubber stoppers on the sensors that work much better. They’re a fun item and would make a great ice breaker (no pun intended).

Last in the box were the items for the main activity – making bird feeders. Not the wooden house kind; the kind made with bird seed that you tie to a tree. My bag of birdseed was the other damaged item in the original box, which is why it’s in a plastic tub in this picture. It had scattered everywhere, so Unbox Love sent me a brand new bag to make sure I still had enough for the activity.

The cards give a recipe for a gelatin and bird seed feeder and also a peanut butter and bird seed pine cone feeder. The heart-shaped cookie cutter shapes the gelatin one and can also be used to make the sugar cookies from the earlier recipe.

I’ve mentioned in past reviews that my fiancé, Mike, really likes working with his hands, so this activity is right up his alley. It’s always fun to work together to make something and this won’t sit around the house collecting dust. We live in the city and don’t have any trees outside our building, but my grandmother loves to feed the birds, so we’ll be passing the final product on to her.

The final activity is a connections card on the back of the instructions. It’s full of conversation starting questions that you can go over with your significant other to get to know them better. Always an awesome addition to any dating box.

So, this box has a total of four activities, plus the bonus recipe. They all foster togetherness and love. You learn to work together and surprise each other. I really thought it was unique.

The value of the items in the box really varies by month. Some months they’ll be worth more than the box, other times less. It evens out over time. While the items in this month’s package probably add up to a bit less in value than the $39 price of the box, you’re adding in the fact that someone else has made this date easy for you. It’s been planned in advance. All you need to do is put the kids to bed and pull out the instruction cards.

I’m sure we’re not the only couple who gets tired of the traditional dinner and a movie. It’s nice to have something new to do each month at home and the date box costs less than you’d pay going out.
