Warner Bros. Pictures released a new Steelbook 20th anniversary edition of Space Jam on Nov. 15. The film is fun but mediocre and this version doesn’t add much in the way of extra features.
As you may remember from when the movie was originally released back in 1996, aliens come to earth to kidnap the Looney Tunes to work in their interstellar amusement park. Our cartoon heroes challenge the small bugs to a basketball game to win their freedom. The aliens then steal the talents of several famous NBA players, so the Looney Tunes reel in Michael Jordan who has recently started his baseball career. Can our heroes win the game or will they be turned into intergalactic slaves? Can they steal back the basketball players’ talents or will they be left lacking?
The premise for the movie is thin and the acting isn’t great. The Looney Tunes draw laughs, but the script seems to be a long promotional video for Jordan and the cartoon characters who had been dwindling in popularity. I’m not saying it isn’t a fun movie; just don’t expect it to be spectacular.
Also, I’m not really sure why they bothered putting out a new edition. I expected some new features – maybe a look back at the making of the film or some additional Looney Tunes highlights. Instead, the only special features are commentary, two music videos, the movie trailer and a 20-minute ad for the film that played on television. Hardly worth the extra money for the set.
Space Jam is an amusing kids film with a somewhat mediocre plot. If you grew up with it, you may want to introduce your children to the story. However, unless you’re interested in the new Steelbook packaging, I would buy the cheaper Blu-ray version because the special features aren’t really anything to be excited about.
