This week’s new releases are filled with thrills and drama, taking audiences through the burdens of high school, love and parenthood. J.K. Rowling is bringing magic back to the big screen in a new film that is set before Harry Potter.
A Magizoologist travels to the New York City with a suitcase full of magical creatures in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. When some beasts escape and mysterious magic threatens the city, he is forced to stay a little longer to protect the underground world of wizards from being exposed to the public. The PG-13 fantasy adventure is written by Harry Potter’s J.K. Rowling and stars Eddie Redmayne, Jon Voight, Ron Perlman, Colin Farrell and Zoe Kravitz. It’s playing in conventional, 3D and IMAX theaters for two hours and thirteen minutes.
A terrible car accident leaves a newly crowned boxing champion with a serious spinal cord injury in Bleed for This. Despite having a brace screwed into his head, he’s determined to make it back in the ring. The one hour and fifty-six minute drama is based on the triumphant true story of Vinny Pazienza who battled back from severe trauma to a championship middleweight bout against Roberto Duran. Miles Teller stars in the biopic alongside Aaron Eckhart and Katey Sagal. The drama is rated R for language, sex and accident images. It’s currently available in limited theaters but expands to wide release on Nov. 23.
A teenager girl deals with the woes of growing up awkward and unpopular in The Edge of Seventeen. The lonely high school student begins to see the light at the end of the tunnel when she falls for one of her classmates. The one hour and forty-two minute coming of age story stars Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick. The dramatic comedy is rated R for sex, language and teenage drinking.
A romance turns volatile in Nocturnal Animals. The one hour and fifty-six minute drama follows the emotional roller coaster of a couple going through their relationship which transforms from deep love to hate and revenge. Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams star in the Tom Ford directed film alongside Michael Shannon, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney and Michael Sheen. The dramatic thriller is rated R for violence, menace, nudity and language. The limited released film expands to more theaters on Nov. 23 and opens wide on Dec. 9.
A man becomes the guardian of his teenage nephew following the death of his brother in Manchester by the Sea. Returning to his hometown to take care of the teen, he’s forced to face the reasons that made him flee all while coping with his brother’s death and learning what it’s like to be a parent to an adolescent. Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Lucas Hedges, Kyle Chandler, Gretchen Mol and C.J. Wilson star in this limited released drama. The two hour and seventeen minute film is rated R for language and sex.
The dangerous jobs of electric grid workers are the focus of the film Life on the Line. When a man is electrocuted while trying to fix the wires, his brother takes care of his family, determined to keep them away from the dangerous occupation. His plan backfires though when his niece falls for one of his coworkers. John Travolta, Kate Bosworth, Devon Sawa and Sharon Stone star in the limited released action film. The one hour and thirty-eight minute thriller is rated R for violence and language.
More thrillers, dramas and biopics are making their way into theaters next week. Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard’s Allied and Warren Beatty’s Rules Don’t Apply enter theaters on Nov. 23 alongside the latest Disney animated film Moana.
