Trailer Park: ‘20th Century Women’ hopes to storm the box office

The holiday vacation is a great time to see a new movie. Last weekend brought out many new films but this weekend’s two new releases could be considered hidden gems. Mixing both drama and comedy, the settings in these lesser known films play a key role in their characters’ lives. Annette Bening’s latest shows the importance of women in the life of a teenage boy.

A single mother in her fifties seeks help in raising her teenage son in Santa Barbara, California in 20th Century Women. She reaches out to two younger women for guidance, her artist tenant and alluring teen neighbor. With their different perspectives on life, each plays an integral role in the coming of age of the young man. Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann and Billy Crudup star in the comedic drama. The film is currently playing in limited theaters but expands to wide release on Jan. 20. The one hour and fifty-eight minute film is rated R for sex, language, nudity and drugs.

A bus driver shares his name with his New Jersey town in Paterson. The film follows a week of his life as he goes day in and day out following the same routine, driving the bus, observing the lives of others and writing poetry. His wife, on the other hand, aspires to do something new every day. Their differences and support for each other are the backbone of their relationship. The one hour and fifty-eight minute comedic drama stars Adam Driver and Golshifteh Farahani. The limited released film is rated R for language.

Another drama is set to hit the big screen next week with the release of Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe’s Hidden Treasures. The latest film in the Underworld series, Blood Wars is also being released on Jan. 6.
