While the Hollywood sign remains to be one of the top destinations for tourists, no one suspected the new year to start off with it altered.
On New Year's Day, Angelenos woke up to the famous sign changed to the "Hollyweed" sign.
According to the Los Angeles Times, security footage revealed that at 3 a.m. the male assailant, dressed in all black, ascended Mount Lee to cover the O's with E tarps.
One tarp had a peace sign on it, while the other one had a heart decal.
Because the Hollywood sign itself was not damaged, the incident would be considered a "misdemeanor trespassing" for the individual.
It is worth noting that California legalized marijuana for recreational use in November with Proposition 64.
The first time someone changed the sign to "Hollyweed" was 41 years ago, also on New Year's Day. It marked the first day California allowed for "one ounce of marijuana as a misdemeanor, rather than a felony."
