J Cole has released his first track of the new year, titled "High for Hours" and the single began trending on Twitter within hours of being released.
After three straight critically acclaimed albums, Born Sinner (2013), Forest Hills Drive (2014) and the most recent 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), J Cole has reached a point where anything he releases has fans salivating and the timing of the track could not be more fitting.
Cole released the track on the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in the song muses on the plight in which the black community still faces 40 years after the civil rights icon's death. The following is one of the most memorable quotes from "High for Hours."
I had a convo with the president, I paid to go and see him/
Thinking bout the things I said I'd say when I would see him/
Feeling nervous, sitting in a room full of white folks/
Thinking about the black man plight, think I might choke, nope/
Raised my hand and asked a man a question/
'Does he see the struggles of his brother in oppression?'/
And if so, if you got all the power in the clout as the president
What's keeping you from helping n*ggas out?
Fans on Twitter were quick to voice their pleasure with the song.
