Queen Elizabeth misses New Year's church service due to illness

Queen Elizabeth was not feeling up to sharing in the royal family's New Year's Day traditions.

E! Online reports that both the Queen and her husband Prince Phillip came down with colds two weeks prior to the Christmas holiday and canceled their plans to travel via train to Sandringham. The two arrived on a helicopter a day later and Prince Phillip recovered from his cold. However, Her Majesty appeared to still be under the weather on Sunday and did not attend New Year's Day church services.

"Her Majesty The Queen will not attend Sunday worship at Sandringham today. The Queen does not yet feel ready to attend church as she is still recuperating from a heavy cold," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

The Queen also had to deliver her well wishes to Canada, who were celebrating 150 years of confederation. A video of the Queen congratulating the country on the landmark anniversary was posted to the Royal Family's Twitter page on Sunday.

"On this eve of national celebrations, my family and I are with you in spirit. We pray that God will bless Canada and that over the next 150 years, Canadians will continue to build a better country and a better world," she said.
