The drama and thrillers entering theaters this weekend feature some Hollywood heavy hitters. Empire’s Taraji P. Henson, Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer and singer Janelle Monáe star in a drama based on little known history in America’s space race. A new action based thriller highlights performances by Adrian Grenier, Johnathon Schaech, Nicolas Cage and John Cusack. Kate Beckinsale once again heads up the latest installment in the Underworld series.
The battle between the Lycans and the Vampires continues in Underworld: Blood Wars. As an enemy of both sides, Selene may be the one that can put the fighting to rest, but she may have to go to extreme measures to do so. Kate Beckinsale stars in the action packed thriller. The one hour and thirty-one minute horror film is rated R for violence and sex.
A little known story behind America’s race into space is told in Hidden Figures. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson broke race and gender barriers as integral scientists and mathematicians in NASA’s quest to bring an astronaut into space. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe star in the two hour and seven-minute drama alongside Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons. The PG film is based on real events.
Two brothers prove that family comes before all in Arsenal. Despite the different paths they took in life, the Lindel brothers continue to put family first. When one gets caught up in a life of crime and gets himself and his daughter kidnapped, the straight-laced brother calls on an old friend for help and takes the law into his own hands. Adrian Grenier, Johnathon Schaech, Nicolas Cage and John Cusack star in the action-packed film. The limited released thriller runs for one hour and thirty-two minutes. It’s rated R for violence, language and drugs.
Another thriller, The Bye Bye Man, is set to enter theaters on Jan. 13. Also debuting next week is Jamie Foxx’s new crime drama Sleepless and the animated film Monster Trucks.
